Summer Lawn Care Tips for Memphis Homeowners
Memphis summers are no joke. Between the heat indexes pushing past 105°F and the humidity that makes even the toughest grasses sweat, your lawn is working overtime from June through September. Here's what we do at Mr. C's Lawn Care to keep lawns in Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett, Cordova, and across the Memphis area looking sharp all summer long — and what you can do between visits to protect your investment.
Water Deep, Not Often
The biggest mistake Memphis homeowners make in summer is running their irrigation on a short, daily cycle. That trains your roots to stay shallow, which makes the grass vulnerable the moment temperatures spike. Instead, water deeply two to three times per week, long enough to push moisture 4–6 inches into the soil. Early morning is the best window — typically before 9am — so the turf dries out before the afternoon heat sets in and before fungal conditions can take hold overnight.
Raise Your Mowing Height
This one surprises a lot of people. When summer heat arrives, most lawns — especially Bermuda and Zoysia, which are common throughout the Memphis area — actually do better when mowed slightly taller than you might think. Taller grass blades shade the soil, hold moisture longer, and reduce the stress on root systems during heat waves. We typically recommend keeping Bermuda at around 1.5 to 2 inches and Zoysia closer to 2 to 2.5 inches through the hottest months. Never cut more than one-third of the blade at a time, or you risk shock.
Watch for Lawn Disease
Memphis summers create near-perfect conditions for fungal diseases like brown patch and dollar spot. High humidity, overnight dew, and warm soil temperatures combine in a way that can turn a healthy lawn patchy within days. If you notice circular brown or tan spots appearing — especially after a stretch of rainy weather — that's your first signal. Avoid evening watering, cut back on nitrogen fertilizer during peak heat, and reach out to a lawn care professional before the problem spreads. Catching it early makes all the difference.
Fertilize Strategically, Not Excessively
Summer is not the time to push aggressive growth with heavy fertilizer applications. Too much nitrogen during a heat wave forces your grass to grow faster than it can sustain, which stresses the root system and actually increases disease risk. If your lawn needs a boost, a light application of slow-release fertilizer in early summer — before the worst heat arrives — is the right approach. For most Memphis lawns, the heavy fertilizing belongs in the fall when the grass can actually use it to strengthen roots before winter.
Stay on Top of Weeds Before They Take Over
Crabgrass and other summer annual weeds thrive in the same conditions that stress your lawn. If your turf is thin or weakened by heat, weeds move in fast to fill the gaps. Pre-emergent treatments applied earlier in the season help, but summer is when you need to stay vigilant. Hand-pull or spot-treat small outbreaks before they go to seed. A lawn that's mowed at the right height and watered properly is naturally more competitive against weeds — healthy, dense grass is your best defense.
Give Your Equipment (and Your Lawn) a Break in the Worst Heat
During a Memphis heat wave — the kind that strings together 10 or more days above 95°F — your lawn may slow its growth significantly. That's a natural stress response, not a problem. If you're managing your own mowing, don't push the schedule just because the grass "should" be ready. Mowing stressed turf in extreme heat can tip it over the edge. At Mr. C's Lawn Care, we monitor conditions and adjust service timing when the heat index creates real risk for the turf — because a lawn that's been pushed too hard in July is going to show it in August.
